The family chronicle of the Nauts family from Brunssum

The Nauts family belongs to the old families of Brunssum, a village that had an agricultural character well into modern times. The name Nauts already appears in church records of the region in the seventeenth century. The oldest known representative of the family in Brunssum is Arnoldus Nauts.  Arnoldus lived at a time when Brunssum was part of a fragmented border region, influenced by Spanish, Austrian and later Dutch rulers. Daily life was determined by agriculture, the seasons and the church. Arnoldus was married to Sybilla Loyens, and together they formed the beginning of several branches of the Nauts family who settled permanently in Brunssum. Their children and grandchildren mostly remained in the area. The family was closely intertwined with local village life: marriages took place within Brunssum and surrounding villages, and the Nauts family was prominently featured in baptism, marriage and burial records.
